Yesno elected NAN Grand Chief

Harvey Yesno of Eabametoong First Nation was elected Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN). Joining Yesno will be three deputy chiefs: Alvin Fiddler of Muskrat Dam, Goyce Kakegamic of Keewayvin and Les Louttit of Fort Albany.

Harvey Yesno of Eabametoong First Nation was elected Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN).

Joining Yesno will be three deputy chiefs: Alvin Fiddler of Muskrat Dam, Goyce Kakegamic of Keewayvin and Les Louttit of Fort Albany.

The deputy chiefs handle specific portfolios in education, health, justice and governance for the 49 First Nations of northwestern Ontario and the Far North.

The new executive council was sworn into office immediately on Aug. 15 at the Keewaywin Chiefs Conference in Kashechewan.

Yesno replaces Stan Beardy who was elected the new Ontario regional chief at the All-Nations Chief Conference in June.

Yesno recently quit his position as director for aboriginal community and stakeholder relations for the province's Ring of Fire secretariat office.

Prior to that he was president and CEO of the Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund since 1993 and served five terms as chief of Eabametoong.
