Xstrata smelter director named powerful woman

Eva Carissimi, the Sudbury smelter director for Xstrata Nickel, has been recognized as one of Canada's most powerful women by the Women's Executive Network (WXN).

Eva Carissimi, the Sudbury smelter director for Xstrata Nickel, has been recognized as one of Canada's most powerful women by the Women's Executive Network (WXN).

Carissimi was included in the 2011 Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Awards, which celebrates the professional achievements of women across the country. Carissimi, who serves on the board of directors for Collège Boréal was included in the Trailblazers & Trendsetters category.

“The college is honoured to have supported the nomination of Eva Carissimi,” college president Denis Hubert-Dutrisac said in a news release. “Since 2009, Eva’s vision and commitment to the college have played a key role in the implementation of green initiatives. Her unconditional support has resulted in the creation of the Xstrata Nickel Biodiversity Applied Research Centre. This partnership gives our students unique opportunities to gain valuable expertise in the field of forestry while contributing in a substantive way to the reforestation of our region.”

Carissimi said she was honoured to have been nominated.

“My work and my community continue to be a daily source of inspiration for me,” she said in the release. “By investing time in both Xstrata Nickel and Collège Boréal, I hope to have positively contributed to a natural synergy between two complementary sectors of interest, that is, industry and education.”

Carissimi has recently been promoted to the position of vice-president of operations, CEZ, Xstrata Zinc, and will be based in Valleyfield, Quebec starting in January 2012.
