Industry Minister and Parry Sound-Muskoka MP Tony Clement has festooned the Town of Parry Sound with $1.3 million to beautify the place.
It's money coming out of the $50 million G8 Infrastructure Fund set up last February to host the world's economic leaders in Huntsville, June 2010, but also leave a lasting legacy in the region.
About $1.1 million is earmarked for new sidewalks and trees on Seguin Street, with $194,000 set aside for a welcome granite stone on Bowes Street, new lighting for a concert stage and downtown banner displays.
“These funds will go a long way to improve the pedestrian routes downtown, will enhance the appearance of our town core and will improve the welcoming atmosphere,” said Parry Sound Mayor Richard Adams in a May 22 Industry Canada statement.
Minister Clement said the event will provide “tremendous economic benefit” for the region and through strategic infrastructure investments, “we are ensuring that Parry Sound makes the most of the economic opportunities that follow from hosting this prestigious event.”
