Algoma University College is offering a one-of-a-kind program starting this fall to produce professionally trained social and economic development officers for the North. The Sault Ste. Marie-based post-secondary institution received approval in the spring from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to proceed with a new four-year bachelor of arts honours program in community economic and social development. The college also received $45,990 from FedNor to conduct market research in designing a promotional strategy to explore online classes, distance education and part-time classes for working professionals to upgrade their skills. A number of community development officials from the Algoma district are assisting in drawing up the curriculum.
