Town hopeful company and union will strike a deal (08/01)

Town officials in Iroquois Falls are confident an agreement can still be reached between unionized workers and Abitibi Consolidated Inc. to keep the mill's No. 1 paper machine running.

Town officials in Iroquois Falls are confident an agreement can still be reached between unionized workers and Abitibi Consolidated Inc. to keep the mill's No. 1 paper machine running.

Over half of the mill's 543 workers are set to lose their jobs on Sept. 14 if a deal cannot be reached between the company and Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union Local 90.

On May 31, Abitibi announced its plans to shut down the No. 1 paper machine in Iroquois Falls after Local 90 members rejected a tentative deal struck between the company and the union.

Officials with the municipality have since been trying to get both sides back to the bargaining table in hopes of reaching an agreement that will save the area's economy from a potential loss of $10 million annually.
