Timmins Chamber rolls out policy task forces

How the province's plans may affect development around the Ring of Fire is just one of many topics the Timmins Chamber of Commerce is addressing through a series of task forces this fall.

How the province's plans may affect development around the Ring of Fire is just one of many topics the Timmins Chamber of Commerce is addressing through a series of task forces this fall.

To help adjust to the evolving economic climate in the North, the chamber is hosting a series of discussions on issues directly affecting the region.

These also include population growth, and the development of a municipal vision.

A forestry policy task force will be held Oct. 28, co-hosted by Eacom operations manager Mike O'Blenis and Tembec chief forester Alan Thorne. This will focus on addressing the “serious questions” that things like the Endangered Species Act, Forest Tenure Review and Far North Act have on wood-harvesting rights.

The Far North Act will be the subject of its own task force on Nov. 16, outlining advocacy for changes to the bill that will allow for land-use planning without threatening economic development.

Input from participating public and industry voices will help guide the chamber's advocacy efforts.
