The Kenora and Rainy River Districts suffered a net lost of 7,000 jobs in the trade, transportation, professional and public-administration sectors over the past year, a report on labour market trends in northwestern Ontario reveals.
The report, which was outlined recently by the Northwest Training and Adjustment Board, predicts employment opportunities will increase in the coming year.
The report focused on new or emerging social and economic trends that have developed in the region over the past year.
Among its projections, the report predicts employment opportunities will increase in the mining sector with much of the growth anticipated in platinum-group metals and exploration; employment in the tourism industry will remain stable or increase slightly if the value of the Canadian dollar remains low; public-sector jobs will remain stable or slightly decrease in the short term; and employment opportunities in the education sector will rise due to retirements.
