Tax revenue to remain unchanged for Manitouwadge (08/01)

A provincial reviewer recommends not making any changes to a unique piece of taxation legislation that favours the Town of Marathon over the Township of Manitouwadge. Three Hemlo gold mines are required to pay about $2.

A provincial reviewer recommends not making any changes to a unique piece of taxation legislation that favours the Town of Marathon over the Township of Manitouwadge. Three Hemlo gold mines are required to pay about $2.5 million a year in municipal taxes. Manitouwadge claims the revenue formula in the Municipal Extra-Territorial Act has caused it to miss out on $4.6 million since the act came into force in the late 1960s. The provincial adviser says making changes would create other tax and revenue problems for the two municipalities. Marathon and Manitouwadge will continue to receive about $1.6 million and $800,000 annually, respectively, while the mines are still operating. The legislation allows the towns to tax the mines even though they are 40 kilometres away beyond their municipal boundaries.
