The City of Sault Ste. Marie is deferring Algoma Steel Inc.'s second and third tax bill instalments while the debt-ridden steel producer restructures. ASI paid its interim tax bill of about $4 million, but asked the city to assist by deferring the second and third payments. The deferral gives ASI more money in its operating line of credit while undergoing restructuring. In late April, the company was granted 30-day protection from creditors by the Ontario Supreme Court under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act.
