A Level 3 emergency was declared at Vale Inco's Copper Cliff facilities when a cloud of sulphuric acid mist escaped through the ventilation system during the commissioning of the acid plant on June 1.
The emergency air horn sounded at 11:34 a.m. to notify area residents, alerting them to remain indoors, close all doors and windows, and turn off furnaces, air conditioners and other air intakes.
After analyzing wind speed and weather conditions, emergency personnel found no evidence of acid mist in the community and no risk of additional acid mist traveling beyond company boundaries.
The Level 3 emergency received an "all clear" status at 12:02 p.m.
