Some of the City of Greater Sudbury's most outstanding citizens were celebrated at the sold-out Sixth Annual Community Builders Awards of Excellence gala held on Feb. 26.
Hosted by Northern Life publisher Abbas Homayed and Persona's Marianne Zedra, the event saw eight awards handed out to winners from a variety of sectors, including Jean-Marc Spencer, executive director of the Caisse populaire des Voyageurs.
Spencer was highlighted in the Economic Development category for heading up one of Northern Ontario's largest credit unions, with a loan and investment portfolio totaling more than $900 million.
Other winners include renowned health and safety advocate Homer Seguin, whose work over the last 50 years has led to the institution of countless workplace safety measures across the country. He helped push the provincial government for regulations on Inco's sulfur dioxide emissions in the late 1960s, and successfully bargained for joint health and safety committees, as well as employer-paid, union-appointed health and safety inspectors.
