A total of 33 fewer single-detached housing starts were counted in Sudbury in April, according to data released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) on May 8.
Three homes were started in the city this April, down from 36 in April 2008. The month saw 19 fewer singles starts than the 10-year average. For the year-to-date, singles starts totaled 11 units, down from 62 for the first four months of 2008.
“Starts have slowed this year, particularly for single-detached construction,” said Warren Philp, Northern Ontario market analyst with CMHC. “This is consistent with our forecast of slowing homeownership residential construction activity.”
“Currently, housing demand is being satisfied by the resale market which continues to see increased listings,” he said.
