A campaign to redevelop CP Rail's rail yard in Sudbury's downtown core has been officially launched by Imagine Sudbury, a group of citizens ranging from businesspeople, activists to academics.

The group seeks to remove the rail yard from the 52-acre parcel of land and relocate it to industrial land elsewhere in the city. The area could then be redeveloped into a combination of recreational, residential and commercial space.

The scale and cost of such a project is not yet known. The group insists the actual CPR rail line should remain downtown to facilitate passenger traffic.

A similar project was considered in the 1970s when city council debated about taking ownership of the CP rail yard.
