Sudbury gets $1.5 million for economic development

Greater Sudbury's Nickel Basin Federal Development Corporation has received $1.5 million to go towards loans, equity and loan guarantees for small and medium-sized businesses.

Greater Sudbury's Nickel Basin Federal Development Corporation has received $1.5 million to go towards loans, equity and loan guarantees for small and medium-sized businesses.

Of the funding, Bestech and MIRARCO will each receive $27,500 to hire a youth intern for a one-year period to do design and engineering work, research and innovation activities in the mining sector.

“Today's announcement is a strong show of support for our organization and the work we do to generate positive economic results in our service area,” Paul Reid, chair of the Nickel Basin Federal Development Corporation, said in a news release. “We have a proud history of helping local entrepreneurs transform their ideas into successful businesses that create jobs and contribute to the economic well-being of this region.”

Funding for the corporation comes from FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports initiatives that strengthen community economic development, enhance business growth and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
