Canadian steel producers want to provide "fresh insights" into the economic impact and future prospects of their industry.
The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) have released a study making a case for the industry's importance and growth potential in areas of innovation, renewable energy, fuel-efficient transportation and construction applications.
The association commissioned Peter Warrian, a senior research fellow at the University of Toronto's Munk Centre for International Studies, to perform the study. The United Steelworkers and the Canadian Steel Trade and Employment Congress made funding contributions.
CSPA president Ron Watkins said this analysis improves public understanding of "the new steel industry" and hopes the study findings resonate with government policymakers to understand the steel industry's role with customers and suppliers.
The study contains information on the industry's economic and community impact, its ability to attract investment and to establish technology clusters, and outlines where this heavy industry sector is going.
