The man who helped lead St. Marys Paper Ltd. out of financial insolvency wilderness in the early 1990s is leaving the Sault Ste. Marie papermaker for a job on the West Coast. Norm Facey, who served as general manager at St. Marys for seven years, will leave July 13 for a posting at Norske Skog's Elk Falls pulp and paper operation on Vancouver Island. After taking over a company operating under bankruptcy protection, the mill went on to post profits every year -- including $50 million in the last fiscal year -- due to continuous investment in new technology and high demand for its supercalender paper. The plant employs 425 in the Sault mill and 250 in woodlands operations. Facey's successor has not been named.
