South Algonquin studies potential for cellular service expansion (4/02)

FedNor gave $26,000 to the Township of South Algonquin for a feasibility study on expanding cellular phone service across the area.

FedNor gave $26,000 to the Township of South Algonquin for a feasibility study on expanding cellular phone service across the area.

“By enhancing connectivity within the South Algonquin region, we can create opportunities for economic growth by attracting new enterprises and expanding existing tourist sector industries,” Andy Mitchell, secretary of state, said in a press release.

The study will involve fieldwork and research to identify the need for cellular service in the South Algonquin area, and the number of potential users in the suggested coverage area.

The study will determine exactly which type of infrastructure is needed, geographically where that infrastructure will be best placed, and what the overall cost will be to implement an analogue cellular network in the region.

“We can all profit from the availability of effective telecommunications applications in our region,” said Jim Etmanski, mayor of the Township of South Algonquin. “Access to modern technology will enhance all community sectors and enable us to maximize the commercial benefits of the knowledge-based economy.”

FedNor funding will also cover the costs of consulting fees.
