The Township of Schreiber is determined to build a railway interpretive centre, regardless of whether it obtains funding from the province's SuperBuild fund. A study conducted in 2000 concluded a $12-million centre would be a definite attraction for tourists travelling on Highway 17. To receive funding under the SuperBuild program, the community is required to have private-sector involvement. The Canadian Pacific Railway said last year it supports the project, but will not provide financial support.
An official with Schreiber's heritage and tourism committee says the town will build a smaller-scale facility if it does not get the provincial funding. The committee has been collecting artifacts from area residents.
