Sault zoning recommendations approved

Implementing the recommendations in an industrial land study approved by Sault Ste. Marie city council will take a number of steps. But how long it will take to implement the recommendations - or continue with the process needed to implement the recommendations - is still unknown.

In an 8-2 vote, council recently approved the recommendations in the industrial land study report and authorized its implementation. Council also authorized city staff to immediately apply for funding from FedNor to help pay for the engineering and design work for three of the eight areas identified in the study.

The study was undertaken to establish a database of existing industrially zoned land and to identify any impediments to lands already zoned industrial, as well as make recommendations on how these impediments can be overcome. It also reviewed and identified additional lands with the potential for development.

Properties that are already zoned for industrial use can begin with engineering design work and study - the preliminary steps to extend servicing. Properties that are not zoned industrial need to begin with environmental analysis, a review of drainage water tables and an archaeological review.
