Sault Tourism recognizes excellence at awards gala

Tourism Sault Ste. Marie acknowledged the efforts of five businesses and individuals during its ninth annual Tourism Awards gala on Oct. 27.

Tourism Sault Ste. Marie acknowledged the efforts of five businesses and individuals during its ninth annual Tourism Awards gala on Oct. 27.

“Our industry has faced some tough challenges over the past few years but has managed to continue to work together to develop new products and find new and innovative ways to attract more visitors to our city,” Tourism Sault Ste. Marie executive director Ian McMillan said in a news release. “The people and businesses that we have recognized tonight have been instrumental in making sure our tourism partnership remains one of the best in the country.”

The Tourism Award of Excellence went to Hans Green, who was cited for long service, an entrepreneurial spirit, leadership and integrity.

Porter Airlines was honoured as Business of the Year. Recognized for demonstrating leadership by “investing equally in both staff and customers through staff training or special programs and through value-added undertakings for the customer.” Porter's presence in the Sault was cited as contributing to “the provision of a better total tourism product in Sault Ste. Marie.”

Judy Gallagher of the Comfort Inn received the Customer Service Award, which goes to an individual employed in the tourism industry who has contributed to the betterment of the tourism experience for visitors. Recipients exhibit a courteous, friendly manner, is customer-service oriented, and regularly goes beyond the expected duties and performances of their job responsibilities.

The Tourism Ambassador Award was bestowed on Master Peter and Tracy Cornacchio. Recognizing an individual or group who, while functioning as a volunteer(s), has made a significant contribution towards strengthening our local tourism economy, helping to achieve impressive results, the recipient is a volunteer and not a paid employee.

Chelsey Smith received the Student Hospitality Award based on her academic and co-operative education performance and making positive contributions to the program and the hospitality industry. Smith is a second-year student in the hospitality management hotel and resort program at Sault College.
