Businesses in downtown Sault Ste. Marie are getting some provincial dollars to spruce up their storefronts and interiors.
The Ministry of Agriculture is delivering $570,000 to help the city and the Downtown Association in retail revitalization efforts in the city's core shopping district. Sault MPP David Orazietti made the funding announcement, Nov. 28.
There are 50 projects and more than $7 million in improvements on the books, which include a $15,000 grant to renovate Algoma Natural Healing Clinic and another $15,000 for historical restorations to the Barnes Block.
Downtown manager Udo Rauk says the money is earmarked to brand the Queen Street-area retail district as a "lifestyle neighbourhood" with quality shopping, dining, entertainment and new living space.
The provincial money comes out of the Agriculture Ministry's RED (Rural Economic Development) Fund.
