Sault Ste. Marie will receive $100,000 from the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines to help fund a tourism marketing strategy.

Ontario Minister Dan Newman made the expected funding announcement from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. at the annual International Association of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Mayors' Conference.

The money, matched by funds from city coffers and injected with private-partnership funding of about $251,000, will be used for a strategy to promote tourism in the Sault Ste. Marie area.

FedNor has also contributed $226,100 to the marketing strategy.

It's expected that the Downtown Association and the Cambrian Mall will also get involved in the program in 2002.

In total, the fund consists of $826,000, officials say.

Plans include print ads, billboards, new brochures, media promotions and an expanded Web site. The plan includes a study to measure the results, which will be reported back to city council.
