Sault Ste. Marie city council has pulled the plug on a video surveillance system for the downtown core.
A feasibility study prepared by the city's police service for council recommended other means of deterring crime before considering the expense and installation of surveillance cameras. The study found significant cost associated with video surveillance, for which there is no funding available through provincial crime prevention programs, and that the negative aspects of surveillance cameras should be weighed against other options and programs.
Annual ongoing costs for live-monitoring cameras, plus a monthly service fee for fibre optics, would be $183,000 after the first year. The one-time cost for hardware and video signal transmission would be $106,000.
