EDS Canada and General Motors are creating 50 new positions at its Sault Ste. Marie roadside assistance centre.

GM is introducing a technical help desk for its 7,500 American dealerships. The GM Access centre went into operation in late June. The centre will be located within the confines of the existing EDS inbound call centre. Site manager Mike Dickson says the centre’s new business line is a trouble-shooting satellite help desk for computer software and hardware problems.

He expects many of the positions will be filled from within, leaving about 50 openings available within the roadside assistance centre. “We found a tremendous pool within our roadside (centre). We have some very technically skilled people who would be able to fill this obligation quite easily.”

He could provide no specifics on wage or salary ranges, but says the establishment of a dedicated site increases the possibility of EDS pursuing other clients with the same type of need.

“It will certainly help us lasso businesses of similar vein to bring into the Sault.”

In November 2001, EDS and GM partnered to open a $20-million roadside assistance centre, providing jobs for 300 people in a renovated former grocery store at Pim and McNabb streets.

The hours of operation will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, the same hours as most dealerships.

Dickson expects the new centre to be fully operational by August.
