Safety first, says Xstrata's Davis

Xstrata chief executive Mick Davis said six deaths recorded this year at the global miner is of "no comfort to me." "I know that we have made great strides in the field of health and safety over the past few years," said Davis in a Nov.


Xstrata chief executive Mick Davis said six deaths recorded this year at the global miner is of "no comfort to me."

"I know that we have made great strides in the field of health and safety over the past few years," said Davis in a Nov. 23 statement to the company, "while people are seriously injured or die whilst working in our company, we have not done enough."

Davis said four people have died while working for the company in the last month, and six in total in 2008. Their worst year was nine fatalities last year.
