Road development halted (08/01)

A proposal for the construction of an all-weather road to gain access to timber on Black Bay Peninsula near Nipigon has hit a snag.

A proposal for the construction of an all-weather road to gain access to timber on Black Bay Peninsula near Nipigon has hit a snag.

Logging trucks to date have used a winter road built from ice and snow to access timber on the peninsula from December to March. Greenmantle Forests Inc. proposed the road development, citing the winter road as inadequate. Environmetalists argue an all-weather road would result in damage to the wetland area and encourage more logging trucks to enter the area.

In early July the Ministry of Natural Resources made the decision to halt the development of the road. Greenmantle has the option to appeal the ruling directly to the environment minister.

The MNR will be further studying the potential impact of an all-weather road on the peninsula.
