Red Lake looking to expand

The Town of Red Lake is looking to expand west.

The Town of Red Lake is looking to expand west.

Town council has asked the Ministry of Municipal Affairs for permission to start an environmental assessment process to annex about 900 square kilometres of land between the west end of the municipality and Woodland Caribou Provincial Park.

City officials say there is potential for another mine in the area, and that the town would also like to see primary access to the park routed through Red Lake.

If approved by the ministry, the expansion would mark the second time the community has expanded in less than three years. In the summer of 1998, the communities of Red Lake, Golden and Madsen merged to form the Municipality of Red Lake.
