Weyerhaeuser Co. Ltd.'s Dryden pulp mill has been fined $100,000 by the Ministry of Labour after a worker was injured in September 2000 when five pulp bales fell on the cab of his lift truck. The company pleaded guilty in provincial court Aug. 23 to failing to ensure the bales were removed in a safe manner. The lift truck operator was knocked unconscious and was off work for three months. Weyerhaeuser has subsequently revised its rail car unloading procedures, cutting down the number of bales that can be unloaded at a time. Earlier this year, Weyerhaeuser was fined $50,000 for failing to provide the Workplace Safety Insurance Board with details relating to an employee's recovery.
