Propane farms should be certified

The Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) are applauding a recommendation by a provincial safety panel that large propane facilities must be certified by a professional engineer.

It was one of 40 recommendations by the Ontario Propane Safety Panel formed by the provincial government in the aftermath of the Aug. 10 Sunrise Propane explosion in Toronto that resulted in two deaths and forced the evacuation of hundreds.

In a Nov. 7 statement, PEO Chief Executive Office Kim Allen said engineers are best qualified to manage risk and are obligated under their professional code of ethics to safeguard the public interest.

"The complex issues related to public safety and storage require both this expertise, which is a natural part of an engineer's training, and the public accountability their licence brings."
