Fifteen individuals are taking advantage of an opportunity set out by Employment Insurance to hone their technology and communication skills through practical and theoretical applications at Lakehead University in the Advanced Technology and Academic Centre (ATAC). A collaborative effort by the university, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and Human Resources Development Canada has allowed these individuals valuable work experience, thereby increasing their employability, says Michael Pawlowski, administration of finance at Lakehead University.

“Without IBEW, this program would not have happened,” Pawlowski says. “They are doing all the training, both the accident prevention and the technical instruction, to provide skills to people who could one day become members of the Brotherhood.”

It is a 16-week program, of which the first two weeks are comprised of classroom-based training on Workplace Hazardous Material Information System, education on accident prevention, fall protection and a standard first aid with CPR training.
