Portside development in limbo (08/01)

The on-again, off-again saga of Thunder Bay's Portside waterfront development is off again with a developer's failure to obtain $15-million in secured funding for the project.

The on-again, off-again saga of Thunder Bay's Portside waterfront development is off again with a developer's failure to obtain $15-million in secured funding for the project. City officials are not optimistic the amount sought by Thunder Bay Waterfront Developments Inc. is enough to free up matching Northern Ontario Heritage Fund money. The first-phase money would be used for land purchase costs, demolition, clean-up and adding a hotel and some attractions. Despite not contacting the city since early August, the developers plan to meet with city council to address financial concerns. Meanwhile other out-of-town developers have come forward to make a bid for the project.
