The onset of winter means grain cargoes are moving fast and furious through the Port of Thunder Bay.
The port authority reported more than 1 million tonnes of total cargo was moved in November, a milestone last reached in May 2009. Thunder Bay's grain elevators alone handled 891,000 tonnes during the month, the most for one month since May 2002.
In a Dec. 2 release, the authority said the year-to-date grain tonnage in 2011 has surpassed the total grain tonnage from last year. Compared to 2010 totals, there has been a 15 per cent increase in wheat shipments and a 125 per cent increase in canola.
Canola shipments are expected to surpass the 1.2 million-tonne mark this year, which will be a port record.
