The new president of the Canadian Lakehead Port Council, in an attempt to boost the Thunder Bay labour climate, is leading the council in a direction that will concentrate on improving the profile of the climate by lobbying local, provincial and federal politicians.
The council, which represents 13 local unions, is encouraging its members to speak out on issues such as port user fees, deregulation of grain transportation, softwood lumber tariffs, power deregulation and declining lake shipping fleets.
Labour is the main focus of the campaign. Port council officials say labour numbers at the port are down because of less business at the port and the whole shipping corridor of the St.Lawrence River.
The council plans to counter this by lobbying the politicians to make sure they're adequately promoting the port industries
