Phone company negotiates purchase of Internet business

Thunder Bay Telephone is considering the purchase of a local Internet service company in hopes of making money and possibly providing customers with Internet video games.

Thunder Bay Telephone is considering the purchase of a local Internet service company in hopes of making money and possibly providing customers with Internet video games.

As a result of a recent closed-door meeting, city councillors gave Thunder Bay Telephone the green light to proceed with negotiations with the Internet service company, whose identity has not yet been disclosed.

Officials with the municipal telephone company say acquiring the Internet company would add to the customer base in Dryden, Fort Frances and Thunder Bay. More than 15,000 people now use Thunder Bay Telephone Internet services.

But in order for a deal to be struck, Thunder Bay Telephone says the acquisition must fit into Thunder Bay Telephone's current Internet service system and it has to be profitable.

Officials say Internet service costs will likely remain the same - at least for the short term - if the deal goes through.
