The concept of Community Forests is on the agenda of the Northern Ontario Sustainable Communities Partnership (NOSCP) at a March 4-5 workshop in Thunder Bay.
The event, Community Forests: A Tenure Reform Option for Community Sustainable, will be held at the Prince Arthur Hotel.
In a Feb. 9 news release, the forest advocacy group said the current industry crisis is an opportunity to re-evaluate the structure of the current forest tenure system in Ontario.
The group consists of individuals and organizations representing municipalities, non-governmental organizations, unions, academics and Aboriginal organizations.
The workshop will explore models of local governance of Crown forests and the group will develop a vision for how community forests can become reality. According to NOSCP's charter, all residents and communities have rights and responsibilities to exercise shared control and have stewardship of northern forests.
