Ontario contributing to veteran training program

The provincial government will contribute $150,000 to the Helmets to Hardhats (H2H) program, which helps Canadian soldiers transition back into civilian life by training them in the skilled trades.

The federal government announced the launch of the program in January. It mirrors a similar U.S. program that has been in operation since 2003. Through it, soldiers can enter an apprenticeship program where they learn a trade through on-the-job training supplemented by classroom instruction.

“Our military personnel have dedicated themselves to the service of the country, and this program is our opportunity to celebrate them and help them succeed in their civilian careers,” Glen Murray, minister of training, colleges and universities, said in a news release.

The federal and Alberta governments have each committed $150,000 to the program, while TransCanada Corporation has committed $1 million over five years. Additional private funding is also being sought.
