Dryden is looking for developers to construct a solar farm in the northwestern Ontario community.
The area has the photovoltaic potential to generate 1,200 to 1,300 kilowatt hours on a south-facing slope, according to Natural Resources Canada's RETScreen map. The Dryden Development Corporation (DDC) said that's better than anyplace in Germany, the world's largest producer of photovoltaic energy.
The DDC is soliciting Expressions of Interest from developers to construct a 10 megawatt solar project inside the city limits. The place they selected is a city-owned property known as Hatch's field close by the Trans-Canada Highway. A nearby transformer station has the capacity to accept an additional 22.3 megawatt.
Dryden is getting all the approvals out of the way to accommodate two 10-megawatt solar projects, including applying to Hydro One for Connection Impact Assessments.
"The development of a solar park is not just about providing energy to the grid, it is also an economic development opportunity for our community," said Dryden Mayor Anne Krassilowsky in a March 4 statement.
