A new manufacturing facility has set up shop in Sturgeon Falls and will create up to 80 new jobs.
Jennmar, North America's largest manufacturer of mining construction products, received a loan of $1.76 million from the provincial government towards the total project investment of about $6.38 million.
The plant is the first facility for the U.S. based manufacturer. It will produce specialized materials used to reinforce underground mine and tunnel roofs. The state-of-the-art facility was built using advanced production technology that cut energy costs by up to 15 per cent.
The new Sturgeon Falls plant has already introduced several new products into the Canadian mining market, including a new patented bolt that provides better ground control in seismic areas.
“With a lot of mines asking for 24/7 service and just-in-time delivery, Sturgeon Falls presented an ideal location for us to be close to our major Canadian customer base,” said David Hurd, Jennmar of Canada managing director, in a press release.
“It was also a good fit because we needed the skilled labour force and they needed the employment following the closure of a local paper mill. The response from the Canadian mining sector has been extremely favourable and we look forward to growing bigger in the coming months.”
