Northern NDP politicians are demanding government action be taken to deal with the crisis in Northern Ontario's forestry industry.
The NDP legislators are calling for a host of measures federally and provincially to save jobs, including setting an industrial hydro rate, creating a jobs protection commissioner, a federal loan guarantee program and an overhaul of the Employment Insurance program.
This fall, mills in Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Terrace Bay, Kenora, Marathon and Longlac have either experienced temporary or permanent closures. In November, Domtar closed a paper machine in Dryden putting 195 employees out of work.
