Municipal group jumps on infrastructure bandwagon

The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) calls a new $60 million provincial infrastructure fund “extremely beneficial to small communities” across the region.

The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) calls a new $60 million provincial infrastructure fund “extremely beneficial to small communities” across the region.

But the province is requiring that municipalities have an asset management plan in place, something that NOMA executive vice-president David Canfield said many communities haven't had the money to carry out.

In the Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative, up to $9 million is earmarked for small and rural communities under 20,000 to do those management plans. The rest of the $51 million will go toward projects.

“The government has told us that asset management plans will be a requirement for future capital funding requests but, until now, many of our municipalities have been unable to complete this important planning due to resource restraints.”

NOMA represents 37 municipalities from Kenora and Rainy, east to Wawa and Hornepayne.
