More than 40 senior mining industry executives from across Canada met in Ottawa Nov. 18 as part of the Mining Association of Canada's annual meetings with federal officials to push for government change.
The association's executive committee features representation from Northern Ontario firms through Vale Inco's Parviz Farsangi, and Xstrata Nickel's Ian Pearce. It is chaired by Jim Gowans, president and CEO of De Beers Canada.
Throughout these meetings, industry participants emphasized the need for government to improve the investment climate and to avoid duplication between jurisdictions for regulations on air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions.
Other key elements included the need for a clear approach on consultation and accommodation of First Nations as well as efficient resolution of First Nation land claims. A strategy to encourage Aboriginal participation in mining was also sought.
