The Ministry of Labour will turn its eye towards live electrical equipment in the mining industry in September as it continues its month-by-month "blitz" on individual sectors.
Inspectors will look for electrical equipment and practices that could result in injury or death at underground mines, surface plants and aggregate operations across Ontario.
The move is part of the province's Safe At Work Ontario "blitz strategy," as announced in July 2008, with the intent of generating increased productivity and less strain on the health care system.
A similar blitz conducted in November 2008 across industrial-sector workplaces resulted in 822 visits to workplaces, with 2,149 orders related to electrical issues. Of that total, 86 were stop-work orders.
In that time, the wood and metal fabrication sector was identified as having a higher-than-average risk. Visits to 167 such premises resulted in 593 orders, including 17 stop-work orders.
