A recent workshop on Manitoulin Island to promote the benefits of the Green Energy Act,
drew in citizens from throughout the area. The group discussed green jobs and sustainable industries.
Organized by the M'Chigeeng First Nation and the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA), The event featured recommendations from the Green Energy Act Alliance for inclusion in the Act, which was tabled on Feb. 23, 2009. These include guaranteed access to the electricity grid to all producers of sustainable energy.
Wikwemikong's Roger Peltier also made a presentation of plans for a windfarm on the unceded reserve.
"The long awaited Green Energy Act will confirm the province's commitment to truly support this industry and further recognize First Nations as crucial partners and players," said Grant Taibossigai, manager of the M'Chigeeng MERE Wind Farm Project, in a release.
"First Nation communities have current wind development projects ready to capitalize and can become leaders of small community projects within this industry."
