Lumber plant construction in motion

A delay in the arrival of building materials set construction of Weyerhaeuser's engineered lumber plant in Kenora back last month, but company officials say the mill will still open on time.

A delay in the arrival of building materials set construction of Weyerhaeuser's engineered lumber plant in Kenora back last month, but company officials say the mill will still open on time.

The project will be carried out in Kenora under primary contractor Comstock and will employ about 300 construction workers during a peak one-year construction period beginning this month.

The plant's shell is supposed to be up by October so that machinery can be protected from winter elements.

Once the shell is constructed, a specially designed and manufactured press will be imported from Germany. It will be one of only three of its kind in the world and will squeeze timber strands together in the making of laminated strand lumber.

Other components for the plant will come from the United States, British Columbia, Alberta and southern Ontario.

The target date for the production of the plant's first saleable lumber is Nov. 1, 2002.
