Leaking molten metal at Falconbridge Ltd.'s Kidd Creek copper smelter in Timmins forced the smelter to be shutdown in early August. There were no injuries reported; however the plant was expected to remain idle for three weeks while repairs and other routine maintenance were made. There will be no layoffs as employees will undertake the rebuild. The smelter was scheduled for a 10-day shutdown in September, but those plans were bumped ahead due to the leakage shutdown. Production is expected to decline to 136,000 tonnes from its 145,000 tonne capacity for this year due to the spill.
