Dominic Giroux, president of Laurentian University, has been honoured as Personality of the Year in education by Le Droit / Radio-Canada on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Held at the Maison du Citoyen in Gatineau, Quebec, the event highlighted individuals who set themselves apart through their commitment to their community.
The winner of the award in each category is selected from among those named as Personality of the Week throughout the year, an honour Giroux received in June.
Hailing from Ottawa, Giroux was elected as school board trustee at the age of 19, followed by an election as board president at 21. He then served in senior roles in school boards before being named assistant deputy minister for the provincial Ministry of Education and Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Giroux was named Laurentian president in April 2009.
This year, admissions to Laurentian are up 11 per cent overall, including a 26 per cent increase in francophones and a 40 per cent increase for international students.
Giroux also serves as vice-chair of the Association des universités de la francophonie canadienne and as co-chair of the Consortium national de formation en santé.
