A pair of Laurentian University profs has been recognized with awards for excellence in science and engineering.

The inaugural Faculty of Science and Engineering Research Excellence Award, bestowed this fall on Dr. Zhibin Ye, an associate professor of chemical engineering in the school of engineering, recognizes excellent research activities in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Dr. Ye's research focuses on the elaboration of novel nanomaterials that can be utilized as catalysts, lubricants and polymer nanocomposites in drug delivery. Nanotechnology is an emerging field with wide-ranging applications.

Dr. Eduardo Galiano-Riveros is the first recipient of the Faculty of Science and Engineering Teaching Excellence Award for 2011. This award honours excellence in teaching activities in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Dr. Galiano-Riveros is an associate professor in the Department of Physics and has taught numerous courses in physics and biomedical physics. He employs a back-to-basics style of teaching and tends to foster problem solving and critical thinking, with less emphasis on memorization.

"Laurentian University's reputation for excellence in science and engineering is further enhanced by the work of faculty like Dr. Ye and Dr. Galiano-Riveros,” said Dr. Vasu Appanna, dean of the faculty. “Their commitment to advancing understanding among students and to creating knowledge raises the bar. We proudly congratulate both of them.”
