Some of the country's top medical minds have named Dr. Rui Wang, Lakehead University's vice-president of research, as the 2008 recipient of the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics (CSPT) Pfizer Senior Scientist Award.
This award is the highest given by the CSPT to a basic research scientist in Canada for significant contributions to the advancement and extension of knowledge in the field.
Wang led a research team last fall which discovered the regulation of blood pressure by hydrogen sulphide, which could lead to new therapeutic approaches in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Similar research successes have helped Wang to bring millions of dollars in research funding to Lakehead, whose sponsored research income has grown by 107 per cent during the last five years.
"Dr. Wang is both a gifted scientist as well as an effective administrator; Lakehead University is lucky to have him as a model for our researchers, and others in Canada, as he is an innovator and a leader," said Lakehead University president Dr. Fred Gilbert in a release.
Dr. Wang is no stranger to accolades, having been named a Fellow of American Physiology Society in 2005, Fellow of American Heart Association in 2002, and the Investigator award of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in 2000, among several others.
