The Canadian Institute of Forestry has awarded a Lakehead University student with a national fellowship.
Tyson Williams of the Wabigoon First Nation received the annual J. Michael Waldram Memorial Model Forest Fellowship.
Nominated by Lakehead forest faculty, dean Reino Pulkki and professor Peggy Smith called Williams a community "role model" in pursuing his Honours Bachelor of Science in forestry, on top of his forestry diploma from Confederation College.
The award was created in honour of the late J. Michael Waldram, general manager of the Manitoba Model Forest who strove to involve Aboriginal people in sustainable forest management decision making.
Williams was noted for his work with youth on the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation in the Treaty No. 3 area of northwestern Ontario.
The community is well-known for its forestry activities by operating a large nursery, a logging company and the development of a value-added post and beam business.
