Boniferro Mill Works has worked out a new contract with the United Steelworkers (USW) that will keep the Sault Ste. Marie hardwood sawmill operating for five years.
Workers voted 82 per cent in favour of a new collective agreement that improves wages, work benefits and pension provisions. The deal also offers increased security and clear seniority rights.
In a news release, company president Jim Boniferro said the agreement keeps a strong hardwood production team in place and ensures long-term stability.
“Survival in the forest industry over the past few years has required key partnerships with our customers, suppliers, logging contractors and, of course, our employees.”
John Goldthorp, first vice-president of USW Local 1-1000, said his members realize the challenges management have faced over the years.
“This agreement is a sign of confidence in the mill and a commitment from our members to contribute to the recovery through these tough economic times.”
Boniferro Mill Works ships hard maple, white and yellow birch to customers in the U.S. Midwest, Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba.
